Review of the Year 2015

The year 2015 has been a great success. With schooling and even with our families. Sure there’s been some up’s and down’s, but Team 5 has managed to come together and sort things out like a family.

When I first arrived into Year 8, I was worried that I might do things wrong as a prefect or even as a student. I was also nervous that I wouldn’t get enough time to finish my work due to being a prefect also an Extension student. But I was wrong and shouldn’t have doubted what I could do and couldn’t.

I feel really happy with myself because of what I have done this year. I have achieved so much this year and being a prefect has really upgraded my skills of leadership. This where our Year 8 Leadership camp comes in. At the beginning of 2015, Year 8’s had the opportunity to go to Marsden Bay. This camp was to show how much leadership skills we have and how we can improve. And that was where I learnt most of my leadership skills. I was glad that I went because it helped me confidence wise in being a prefect.

The thing that I found most difficult this year was my time management. It was quite hard because on Mondays I had Extension for the morning block, Tuesday mornings we had tech. Friday mornings we did inquiry. So I was weary of my time on Literacy because I had a certain amount of time. Which was good because I was preparing me for college. But I would like to say a HUGE! BIG! Thank you to Mrs Tele’a for helping me heaps in Literacy. Reading and Writing! Without her I wouldn’t know where I’d be this very day.

The things I want help with for my schooling is my Maths. This year I feel that I have done good in my Maths, but I know I could have done better. I wish I knew most of the things I know now to use at the start of the year. Thanks to Miss Clark for helping me for my Maths because that was one of my goals. Get better at Maths.

I’d like to say again that this Year has been a great success. But this couldn’t have happened without our Parents, Teachers, Community and others. And see we have our last trip ever at Pt England school next week Monday with the year 7’s. I can’t wait for that and I also can’t wait for College next year!

Google Expedition

At the age of 12 and 13, Pt England’s Intermediate students got the chance to experience a Google Expedition. It was fortunate to be apart of this incredible group as well as travelling the world with our friends. To kick start the year 7’s were split into their three groups that they are usually in for Te Reo Maori. This all happened while the year 8’s left for tech.

Entering the doors of the common room, the year 7’s were sitting quietly. We made our way ready for P.E.N.N. Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to watch P.E.N.N (Pt England News Network) so we decided to watch it after morning tea. This did take up a little bit of the year 8’s time, but we didn’t mind!

“Rua, you will be going first,” we heard Mrs Tele’a, this reason is because we were lined up in straight lines ready to begin. I was excited. Dave was the man who was going to explain what we were about to do. He asked politely, “So, can you please get your Google Cardboard.” Without any hesitation, everyone rushed towards the table where the object was placed.

I placed the google cardboard on my eyes and looked into it. The first image that popped up was a man named David Attenborough. Have you ever heard of this name? This man is a famous scientist and a narrator on documentaries. He was located in the Borneo Rain forest. It was so incredible and bizarre, because if you turned your head the Google Cardboard recognizes that and rotate with you.

Have you ever wondered where the tallest building is in the world? This was one of the other extraordinary place we had visited. This building is found in Dubai. It is named, The Burj Khalifa, and is made up of 43 floors. The Burj Khalifa has a hotel, a restaurant, working offices and multiple more.

During the Google Expedition, we had little activities. Mrs Tele’a or Dave would choose a place like the Rain forest and the aim was to try and find the Python snake. It was tricky because it was camouflaged with the leaves on the ground.

All these places were incredible and a great experience. I found using the Google Cardboard quite easy and interesting to use in a good way. As everybody knows, in this generation everything is about technology and having Google Cardboard to explore the world in even better. That day was a great day because also I enjoyed it with my friends. Google Cardboard should become worldwide, and hopefully Pt England School as well as the Manaiakalani School’s succeed in getting their own Google Cardboard.

The Time Something of Mine Went Missing

Recently I got a new phone. It wasn’t flash but it was good enough for me. The phone was a android and had everything a phone should have. Not one glitch in this phone at all. I liked my phone, it had games, music, and could take amazing photos, until one day! My phone went missing.

On the day it went missing I had just woken up. The night before we had just come back from my Uncle's funeral. Opening my eyes I just remembered I needed to get in touch with my sister because she was staying at my nan’s. I reached out for my phone. I couldn’t find anything. While I was getting out of bed, I was wondering where it could be.

It was important that I find my phone because if I didn’t get in touch with my sister, she wouldn’t know how to come home. I started looking! Under the bed? No! Between the couch? No! “Aroha, do you know where my phone is?” Aroha was my cousin that was looking after me. She replied without any care, “No.” I knew she wouldn’t take any notice, but to me this was serious.

Half the day passed by. I started thinking. “Could my phone be still at the marae?” I didn’t want to think that it could be, but there was a possibility. Aroha and I took a walk to Glen Innes Town Center. We used the phone box. I called my mum. “Mum have you seen my phone?” “Yes it’s here at the Marae you left it here. I’ve already called your nan and your sister will be dropped off tomorrow.” As soon as I heard those exact words I was relived.

The rest of my day went on fine, and not another worry went through my head. I hope that nothing like that ever happens again!

For Literacy this week. Aoraki has been focusing on making inferences. Making inferences means to connect the story in your own words. Our task was to read a journal called, Kauri Island. We were shared a presentation on google docs and had to understanding what the meaning of the word was. Then we made inferences. This was helping us for our writing and reading and also to understand what we are writing and understand what we're reading.

Topic - How do people receive and spend money?

Are you tired of never getting money or losing your money in a small amount of time? Maybe you don’t deserve it and need to do more chores, or maybe you’re just not being FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE!  Don’t stress because today we are going to be looking at how people, spend and receive money.

My goal for this explanation is to get those of you who are reading this and others out there to understand how to use your money wisely in other words... How to be Financially Responsible? Another purpose I am writing this explanation, is to get those who receive money to appreciate the amount they are given, also to take consideration of those who receive the money for them.

When you ask people how they receive money, the first thought that comes to their mind is the ATM. But what they don’t know is that there are many more ways that people receive money. Yes, an ATM is a way people get their money out. Publics uses their card to get their money or to see how much they have on that certain account. Most people think that when they get money out they are on a benefit, but obviously they are completely wrong. That doesn’t specifically mean that. The could have a job and just have their work money out into their payment card. Hey, that’s another way people receive money... Is by working or having a job.

A lot of people receive their money by working or having a job. They could be a builder, receptionist and many other things. If you have a job surely you are going to get paid. If you work overtime then you are paid more. That’s the thing with jobs you get paid and you get to do stuff that you like. Most of the time. Some family work because they need money to pay for the bills and need stuff that they don’t have, and whatever job they can get they will have. Do you know any other ways kids could get money? Wait hold that thought I do. CHORES!

Yes kids, if you want money you have to earnt, because there won’t be another way unless you ask for it. But you don’t want to ask for it because that’s just sad. So do some chores around the house. Clean the windows, Wash the Dishes, Do the washing etc. When you do these things you are sure to get money. There is one thing I want to tell you. BE GRATEFUL FOR THE AMOUNT YOU GET!  Why? Well it is better than nothing is it. So do chores and receive money.

Yes so there are many ways of how people receive money like... If you are on a benefit you have an income, You could receive money by having a scholarship. But that isn’t for you to spend. The scholarship is for you to choose any private school in New Zealand. Since privates school are really expensive like $22,000 a year. The scholarship either pays all of it or just some of it. But this is still another way to receive money.

How people Spend their money?

How people spend their money is none of my business, but here are some financially responsible ways to spend your money. If you keep reading the next time you receive money you wouldn’t run out so fast.

Firstly when you are received money you would think of going shopping or getting a feed. Well that isn’t being financially responsible is it? Before you even think about going out you should make a list of what you need or what you need to pay off. Kids this goes for you as well as you adults. Making a list will really help you on what to spend and save money.

Secondly when you are given money you should limit the amount of money you spend, and out the rest away just in case you might spend the whole lot.

Once you have bought the stuff that you needed then that is when you can spend up large shopping and going out. But at least you know that you have the stuff you need instead of worrying about it.

Letter to Mr. Burt

Dear Mr Burt,

As you can see Pt England is a very nice and meaningful school. Lot’s of love and care has been put into this school and it’s not just going to stop now. My group and I are researching the problem at the village which is the path and working on how we can make it better. This next paragraph will inform you on everything.

Rave, Lesieli, Khaia and I are planning on making the village for the path a better looking and more stable path to walk over. At the moment it doesn’t look nice when visitors visit our school and won’t be stable for much longer.

We have researched everything we need and have done some designs that could go on the path, and just finishing a model.

This would be really good for the school and will make the village colourful. We are asking for your permission and a little bit of money.
