Review of the Year 2015

The year 2015 has been a great success. With schooling and even with our families. Sure there’s been some up’s and down’s, but Team 5 has managed to come together and sort things out like a family.

When I first arrived into Year 8, I was worried that I might do things wrong as a prefect or even as a student. I was also nervous that I wouldn’t get enough time to finish my work due to being a prefect also an Extension student. But I was wrong and shouldn’t have doubted what I could do and couldn’t.

I feel really happy with myself because of what I have done this year. I have achieved so much this year and being a prefect has really upgraded my skills of leadership. This where our Year 8 Leadership camp comes in. At the beginning of 2015, Year 8’s had the opportunity to go to Marsden Bay. This camp was to show how much leadership skills we have and how we can improve. And that was where I learnt most of my leadership skills. I was glad that I went because it helped me confidence wise in being a prefect.

The thing that I found most difficult this year was my time management. It was quite hard because on Mondays I had Extension for the morning block, Tuesday mornings we had tech. Friday mornings we did inquiry. So I was weary of my time on Literacy because I had a certain amount of time. Which was good because I was preparing me for college. But I would like to say a HUGE! BIG! Thank you to Mrs Tele’a for helping me heaps in Literacy. Reading and Writing! Without her I wouldn’t know where I’d be this very day.

The things I want help with for my schooling is my Maths. This year I feel that I have done good in my Maths, but I know I could have done better. I wish I knew most of the things I know now to use at the start of the year. Thanks to Miss Clark for helping me for my Maths because that was one of my goals. Get better at Maths.

I’d like to say again that this Year has been a great success. But this couldn’t have happened without our Parents, Teachers, Community and others. And see we have our last trip ever at Pt England school next week Monday with the year 7’s. I can’t wait for that and I also can’t wait for College next year!

Extension Reflection

This post is about my year I have had in Extension for 2015.

This year has been extraordinary and I have loved every minute of it! Not a minute went by when I wanted to quit Extension because I had been learning so much. Having Mrs Lagitupu as out Extension teacher was a surprise because I didn't know Mrs Lagitupu to be an Extension teacher. But overall she has been great to us and gave us absolutely great projects to work on to stable our learning and give us more understanding.

The students in Extension this year has been wonderful. They have been understanding and never put each other down! We were like family, we collaborated fantastically and we worked well together. The year 7's this year were amazing and can't wait to see what they're like next year when we're gone.

TRIPS! The trips we had were outstanding we had multiple of them but I can't remember all. Check out my blog to find out more. This year's trips were fun and outstanding. We had heaps of fun as well as learning a lot.

Extension this year was spectacular and I really don't want to leave this school, because that means leaving Extension. I hope that the Extension students next year, do well and get good academic awards!

Bioengineering

In the last couple of weeks, the Year 7 & 8 Extension have been working on a project called Bioengineering.
Bioengineering is two words put in to one! Biology and Engineering. In this project our task was to find the definition of Bioengineering and transfer it in to our own words. In this presentation you will see what I have understood from Bioengineering!

Free Blog Writing

Have you been so comfortable in a place and never want to leave? This is an experience other year 8's and I are going through. Many of us have been here at Pt England for at least 8 years. Pt England school is like another family to us that has helped us through many things, and has lifted our spirits up.

Being a part of Pt England School has helped me in Schooling as well as how to respect the others more appropriately. As you may know I am a year 8, and this is my last year here at Pt England. In less than 2 weeks I will be leaving this school, and moving on to college. Yes I can't wait to move onto college, but it is so sad that we have to leave. I have been here for 5 years and I have made so many memories here as well as great friends. They are actually like my family.

In 2015 I was given role to guide our school to strive to succeed and do their best. Four boys and Four Girls were selected to be prefects and to be a good role model for our school. We have had many upcoming events and our school has succeeded on those event and activities.

Being a prefect has meant a lot to me and has really inspired me to become a great role model to my sisters and family at home. Also being a prefect I have had the opportunity to be apart of many great things like the Hokule'a arrival and speaking for the school to special guests and visitors. I have loved being a prefect and can't wait for what's coming ahead for me at college.

Pt England School is a great school, and you can make a lot of memories. I will love and miss this school always no matter what!

Google Expedition

At the age of 12 and 13, Pt England’s Intermediate students got the chance to experience a Google Expedition. It was fortunate to be apart of this incredible group as well as travelling the world with our friends. To kick start the year 7’s were split into their three groups that they are usually in for Te Reo Maori. This all happened while the year 8’s left for tech.

Entering the doors of the common room, the year 7’s were sitting quietly. We made our way ready for P.E.N.N. Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to watch P.E.N.N (Pt England News Network) so we decided to watch it after morning tea. This did take up a little bit of the year 8’s time, but we didn’t mind!

“Rua, you will be going first,” we heard Mrs Tele’a, this reason is because we were lined up in straight lines ready to begin. I was excited. Dave was the man who was going to explain what we were about to do. He asked politely, “So, can you please get your Google Cardboard.” Without any hesitation, everyone rushed towards the table where the object was placed.

I placed the google cardboard on my eyes and looked into it. The first image that popped up was a man named David Attenborough. Have you ever heard of this name? This man is a famous scientist and a narrator on documentaries. He was located in the Borneo Rain forest. It was so incredible and bizarre, because if you turned your head the Google Cardboard recognizes that and rotate with you.

Have you ever wondered where the tallest building is in the world? This was one of the other extraordinary place we had visited. This building is found in Dubai. It is named, The Burj Khalifa, and is made up of 43 floors. The Burj Khalifa has a hotel, a restaurant, working offices and multiple more.

During the Google Expedition, we had little activities. Mrs Tele’a or Dave would choose a place like the Rain forest and the aim was to try and find the Python snake. It was tricky because it was camouflaged with the leaves on the ground.

All these places were incredible and a great experience. I found using the Google Cardboard quite easy and interesting to use in a good way. As everybody knows, in this generation everything is about technology and having Google Cardboard to explore the world in even better. That day was a great day because also I enjoyed it with my friends. Google Cardboard should become worldwide, and hopefully Pt England School as well as the Manaiakalani School’s succeed in getting their own Google Cardboard.

Andrew Patterson - College Talk

Do you remember the first time you went to college? Or what you felt when you first entered the gates? None of us here at Pt England Intermediate has experienced college as you may know, but in 3 months we will be experiencing the most important start of our lives.

Andrew Patterson came in to talk to us about the different subject that colleges have and extras.
One of the statements that were made by him, were habits. He gave us sheets of paper that had a riddle on it. The riddle was a task to unriddle. The riddle was named, Who Am I? All the year 8’s read it together and was asked if any of us had figured it out. The answer was habits. The riddle was habits. He talked about good habits and bad habits. What are habits? What do they mean? Why do we have them? These were question that were asked to figure out.

I bet you're wondering what does habits got to do with college? Well it has a huge impact for when you go college. You need to have good habits in order to do well in school. As well bad habits to learn from your mistakes. One of the videos that Andrew Patterson showed us said, to make your brain grow you need to make mistakes. This is a meaning that we need to remember.

It was a great talk to prepare us for college, as well as doing well and making us have a good future!

History Of Superman

The Time Something of Mine Went Missing

Recently I got a new phone. It wasn’t flash but it was good enough for me. The phone was a android and had everything a phone should have. Not one glitch in this phone at all. I liked my phone, it had games, music, and could take amazing photos, until one day! My phone went missing.

On the day it went missing I had just woken up. The night before we had just come back from my Uncle's funeral. Opening my eyes I just remembered I needed to get in touch with my sister because she was staying at my nan’s. I reached out for my phone. I couldn’t find anything. While I was getting out of bed, I was wondering where it could be.

It was important that I find my phone because if I didn’t get in touch with my sister, she wouldn’t know how to come home. I started looking! Under the bed? No! Between the couch? No! “Aroha, do you know where my phone is?” Aroha was my cousin that was looking after me. She replied without any care, “No.” I knew she wouldn’t take any notice, but to me this was serious.

Half the day passed by. I started thinking. “Could my phone be still at the marae?” I didn’t want to think that it could be, but there was a possibility. Aroha and I took a walk to Glen Innes Town Center. We used the phone box. I called my mum. “Mum have you seen my phone?” “Yes it’s here at the Marae you left it here. I’ve already called your nan and your sister will be dropped off tomorrow.” As soon as I heard those exact words I was relived.
The rest of my day went on fine, and not another worry went through my head. I hope that nothing like that ever happens again!

Adaptation Surroundings

  • Animals adapt to their surroundings by camouflaging
  • There is a difference between a turtle and a tortoise Tortoise can not swim. Turtles can swim.
  • Penguins and Polar Bears have the same surroundings, but they do not live in the same places. Polar bears live in antarctica which is the bottom of the world, closer to New Zealand. Penguins on the other hand live in the arctic, which is at the top of the world
  • Rattlesnakes rattle their tails to threaten the predators off. This means that if the predator is still annoying the rattlesnake, it has no choice but to attack and dig their fangs in.

  • Camels can go 2 weeks without water. Because they have pouches that stores water.

  • Reindeers does not have a purpose for their antlers. The reason being for this, is because their antlers fall off every year then another group of antlers grow back.
  • Tortoise protect themselves from the sun by living underground away from the extremely high conditions.
  • Polar Bears have black skin, although their skin appears to be white, it is actually transparent.
  • Yaks are known to be the most furriest animals that lives in the mountains AKA the Himalayas.
  • Polar bears have 42 teeth
  • Arctic foxes change the color of their fur with the changes in the season. In winter they are white to blend in with the snow, then in the summer the shed their skin and become brown.
  • Tortoise can go 1 year without water

  • Penguins:
Penguins are a group of aquatic, flightless birds, living in the southern Hemisphere especially in antarctica. Most penguins feed on Krill, Fish, squid and other sea life that is caught while in the sea. Penguins spend 50/50 on land and in water.

Going to TVNZ

As most of our students do on the first week of school here at Pt England, we write a recount about our immersion assembly. An immersion assembly is the starting of the term. So the teachers and everyone participates on what the students of that team are doing or the rest of the term. BUT.... I wasn’t here on Monday so we are going to write a recount about one thing I did during the holidays.

On the second week of the holidays I participated in a holiday programme that Miss King had organized for me and Sela. It was marvelous. I met so many kind people and they were quite nice to me. Most of the kids there were older than Sela and I didn't mind.

It was a three day event, filled with adventure and creativity. My favorite day would have to be the second day. Why? Well the holiday programme was held at the Viaduct Center, not so far from TVNZ. Everyone was excited for this day.
From the Viaduct Center, we walked up and down hills, across roads, and ended up at the TVNZ where they make the, Good Morning show and One News. It was incredible.

Johnson that used to be a presenter on What Now was there and introduced himself to us. Johnson was so chill and was calm when it came to our turn to present our own show that we created. At one time I got to be the host and I was so terrified that I was going to muck up the lines! But then Johnson came to me and said, “Smile, Relax and you’ll be fine.” Once he said that I felt much more better. I think I did a pretty good job.

Later during the day I got to do camera and be the director. Directing isn’t that easy. You have to switch cameras at the right time so you can see everyone talking and getting the single shots. I couldn’t remember them all so I wanted to leave... But I didn’t. I stayed on till the job was done.
Cameras on the other hand was excellent. I had a blast on the cameras. We moved around a lot and pulled up and down on the lever that was FUN!

Overall I had a great time and experience. I would like to thank Miss King and her friend for giving me and Sela the opportunity of having a great holiday. Of course that was my first ever time at TVNZ so it was quite an amusing time. I think that'll be my last but I wont forget what a great time I had. Couldn't have done it without you guys!

Staying in Hospital

For the last couple of days my Nan has been in hospital. It was unfortunate that she was diagnosed with an infection on her leg. It first started with a black hole in her leg. My Nan Maria thought that it would heal by itself... And as she left it, the hole began to expand and became infected.

That same weekend my Nan went Up North to see the family. Once she got back she felt chills everyday and night. She became very ill and was rushed to hospital. She had come down with hay fever which cause an infection on her leg.

She stayed in overnight for observations and stuff and was unfortunate and told that she was going to have surgery to close up the hole and make it feel alright. Once my Nan was noted everytime the clock hit 2.00am she was nill by mouth which means was not aloud to eat. Nan had waited for two days without food and the next morning went into surgery. I was relieved once she had come out and she was feeling alright. She was bit weezy and felt sleepy but that was all part of the process.

My Nan is feeling alright now and her leg is fine! I'm glad that she had surgery because she wouldn't be here today!

The Kauri Tree

For Literacy this week. Aoraki has been focusing on making inferences. Making inferences means to connect the story in your own words. Our task was to read a journal called, Kauri Island. We were shared a presentation on google docs and had to understanding what the meaning of the word was. Then we made inferences. This was helping us for our writing and reading and also to understand what we are writing and understand what we're reading.

GEGNZ (Google For Education New Zealand)

On Wednesday the 12th of August 2015 the year 7 & 8 extension students had the opportunity to present at the GEGNZ Summit Group 2015. GEGNZ stands for Google for Education groups New Zealand. Just so you know that this year is the first year that it has been held and Pt England School was luckily enough to be apart of it.

Once it was time to start we made our way into the school gym. This was located in the entry doorway. As soon as everybody was seated they began with a mihi then a Waiata himene, He Honore. After they sang they talked us through some school rules and emergency exits. Once they finished speaking, Hobsonville Point Primary school introduced a boy named Toby Carr. He is a successful CEO at only 16 years of age. (That’s incredible.) Anyway he talked about having a education finishing school and following our dreams. It was a bit like a future aspiration talk we have here at P.E.S. (Pt England School.) One of the sayings I remember he said was, “Follow your heart.”

As soon as Toby Carr finished his speech we went to our first session. This session would have to be my highlight and that is what I am going to be talking about today.
Firstly the boys introduced themselves secondly we were provided an Apple Macbook Pro, and a bag that was filled with 2 cups of playdough electronic wires and a little device that is called a Makey Makey. Our task was to go on scratchy and create sounds. Then pulled out the playdough, wires and the makey makey.

We had to create anything out of the playdough then connect one of the wires to the macbook finally connect other wires to the makey makey and wires to the playdough. Once you have connected all the wires you get to tap the play dough because one of the wires are connected to the playdough. Then when your sounds are ready on scratchy tap the playdough and it will play off the computer.

This would have to be my highlight of the day because we had fun and we learnt something. It was very creative in many ways and also difficult in some ways. That day was fun and it was fun when we presented as well.

How do People Receive and Spend Money?

Topic - How do people receive and spend money?

Are you tired of never getting money or losing your money in a small amount of time? Maybe you don’t deserve it and need to do more chores, or maybe you’re just not being FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE!  Don’t stress because today we are going to be looking at how people, spend and receive money.
My goal for this explanation is to get those of you who are reading this and others out there to understand how to use your money wisely in other words... How to be Financially Responsible? Another purpose I am writing this explanation, is to get those who receive money to appreciate the amount they are given, also to take consideration of those who receive the money for them.

When you ask people how they receive money, the first thought that comes to their mind is the ATM. But what they don’t know is that there are many more ways that people receive money. Yes, an ATM is a way people get their money out. Publics uses their card to get their money or to see how much they have on that certain account. Most people think that when they get money out they are on a benefit, but obviously they are completely wrong. That doesn’t specifically mean that. The could have a job and just have their work money out into their payment card. Hey, that’s another way people receive money... Is by working or having a job.

A lot of people receive their money by working or having a job. They could be a builder, receptionist and many other things. If you have a job surely you are going to get paid. If you work overtime then you are paid more. That’s the thing with jobs you get paid and you get to do stuff that you like. Most of the time. Some family work because they need money to pay for the bills and need stuff that they don’t have, and whatever job they can get they will have. Do you know any other ways kids could get money? Wait hold that thought I do. CHORES!

Yes kids, if you want money you have to earnt, because there won’t be another way unless you ask for it. But you don’t want to ask for it because that’s just sad. So do some chores around the house. Clean the windows, Wash the Dishes, Do the washing etc. When you do these things you are sure to get money. There is one thing I want to tell you. BE GRATEFUL FOR THE AMOUNT YOU GET!  Why? Well it is better than nothing is it. So do chores and receive money.

Yes so there are many ways of how people receive money like... If you are on a benefit you have an income, You could receive money by having a scholarship. But that isn’t for you to spend. The scholarship is for you to choose any private school in New Zealand. Since privates school are really expensive like $22,000 a year. The scholarship either pays all of it or just some of it. But this is still another way to receive money.

_____________________________________________________________________

How people Spend their money?

How people spend their money is none of my business, but here are some financially responsible ways to spend your money. If you keep reading the next time you receive money you wouldn’t run out so fast.

Firstly when you are received money you would think of going shopping or getting a feed. Well that isn’t being financially responsible is it? Before you even think about going out you should make a list of what you need or what you need to pay off. Kids this goes for you as well as you adults. Making a list will really help you on what to spend and save money.

Secondly when you are given money you should limit the amount of money you spend, and out the rest away just in case you might spend the whole lot.

Once you have bought the stuff that you needed then that is when you can spend up large shopping and going out. But at least you know that you have the stuff you need instead of worrying about it.

_____________________________________________________________________

Conclusion

So there you have it!!! An explanation on how people receive and spend money. At least when you finish reading this you will know more about being Financially Responsible. I hope that this will help you in the future with your money.
